Visakhapatnam City Report (2015)

By: Safe Water Network

Fourty-four percent of households in Vizag, India fall in the category of slum households, many of which suffer from a lack of safe drinking water. While the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) delivers piped water to 54.9 percent of households, there is a supply gap of nearly 66 million liters per day.

Smart Cities and Safe Water Potential

In 2014, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) selected Safe Water Network (SWN) India as a grant recipient to assess the potential of Urban Small Water Enterprises (USWEs) in Vizag, which had widespread opportunity for investment due to the government’s desire to turn it into a smart city. Through its assessment, SWN was able to identify barriers to a safe and consistent water supply in Vizag and determine how best to support the urban poor. The Smart Cities initiative provided an opportunity to facilitate partnerships between the GVMC and safe water entrepreneurs, thereby closing the safe water access gap in Vizag.
